On Monday, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command released a video documenting a recent clash between its officers and members of the Shi’ite group in Abuja. The incident resulted in casualties on both sides, with reports of deaths among both the police and the Shi’ite group members.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Benedict Igwe, claimed that some police personnel were killed by Shi’ite members. Meanwhile, representatives of the Shi’ite group accused the police of attacking their members during what they described as a peaceful procession, leading to the deaths of several participants. Abdullahi Musa, a leader of the Shi’ite procession group, insisted that the group was unarmed, carrying only placards, and questioned the allegations that they were responsible for the deaths of police officers.
In response, FCT Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, issued a statement on Monday describing the attack on the police as unprovoked. She shared the video on her X account and emphasized that the police would continue to pursue the Shi’ite members accused of attacking their personnel. “I’m saddened by the unprovoked attack and brutal killing of our officers by this proscribed, heartless individual called Shi’ite members. This heinous act is unacceptable. Those responsible must face the wrath of the law. Rest well our gallant officers. We’ll haunt your killers,” Adeh stated.
