In an effort to tackle sexual harassment at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Chief Medical Director, Professor John Okeniyi, has announced plans to remove beds from offices within the hospital. He explained that the presence of beds in offices has the potential to encourage inappropriate behavior, particularly sexual advances toward female staff.
During a briefing on his first year in office, Professor Okeniyi highlighted the hospital’s commitment to a strict anti-sexual harassment policy. He stressed that ignorance of the law would not be an excuse for misconduct, adding that swift and firm actions would be taken against violators.
“The rules are clear—‘thou shall not sexually harass,’ and ignorance is no longer a defense. If anyone engages in such behavior, they will face punishment, which will not be swept under the rug,” Okeniyi stated. He also mentioned plans to introduce a “wall of shame” online, exposing offenders for all to see, including their family and friends.
“For those who cannot control their urges, they will have the law to face,” he continued. “We are removing the beds from offices under the guise of night shifts. Night shifts are for working, not sleeping. I will personally oversee the removal process.”
Professor Okeniyi also emphasized the empowerment of hospital personnel to speak up about sexual harassment, ensuring that complaints would be heard and addressed.
