More details emerged on Friday regarding the six-month jail term of popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky. Investigations by Saturday PUNCH revealed that he was sentenced for spraying naira notes and was taken to the Ikoyi Custodial Centre on April 12, 2024…….CONTINUE READING
Sources informed our correspondents that Bobrisky, assigned prison number S682/2024, was initially placed in the Ikoyi prison before being transferred to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri due to the media attention surrounding his case. A reliable source confirmed, “He was first moved to Ikoyi prison for a few days before the controller, Ben-Rabbi Freedman, transferred him to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri.”
Another source corroborated this movement, stating that Bobrisky spent some days in the Medium Security facility before being moved again to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri. This source also mentioned that he received visits from several family members, and all his activities were documented during his stay.
“Many people visited him, including three family members. They followed due process to see him. I also visited him; he looked gentle and sober,” the source added.
**The Special Cell**
Saturday PUNCH learned that certain inmates designated as “Very Important Persons” (VIPs) are sometimes kept separate from the general population for safety reasons. “This area is like a back cell or a single cell originally reserved for well-behaved inmates. They are placed there to reward their good behavior,” a source explained.
When asked about the cost of this arrangement, the source noted that fees are determined by the officer in charge, often amounting to significant sums depending on the inmate’s status. “The recent altercation between DSS and prison service concerning (Godwin) Emefiele at the court was about the advantages of housing such individuals in custody,” the source added.
It was suggested that Bobrisky may have been kept in this “special cell” during his time at Kirikiri. Another source confirmed that negotiations between inmates and prison officials typically begin in court. “Bobrisky was allegedly shielded from other inmates upon his admission. Very few inmates saw him at the medium facility before his transfer to the maximum prison; it was all prearranged.”
However, Abubakar Umar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, denied claims of preferential treatment for VIP inmates, insisting, “We are not aware of such practices. All inmates receive the same treatment, and we do not offer preferential treatment to anyone.”
Efforts to obtain Bobrisky’s response were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls or respond to messages on his official Facebook and WhatsApp accounts.
**Controversial Cross-Dresser**
Bobrisky has been at the center of controversy since April 3, 2024, when Lagos State EFCC operatives arrested him over allegations of mutilating naira notes worth ₦490,000 and money laundering. This arrest followed a viral video showing him spraying naira at the premiere of the movie *Ajakaju* on March 24, 2024.
He was arraigned at the Federal High Court in Lagos on six counts. The first four charges were related to the abuse of Nigerian currency, while the last two were about money laundering. Before the charges were read, EFCC prosecutor Sulaiman Sulaiman requested the court to dismiss counts five and six, which the court approved, scheduling a judgment date for April 9, 2024. Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the remaining charges and was sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine for abusing the naira.
Despite expectations of a changed appearance following his time in custody, Bobrisky hosted a celebratory party just hours after his release on August 5, 2024. In a viral video, he appeared more radiant than before, claiming, “I came back from jail with a nice body,” which raised doubts about the authenticity of his prison experience.
Trouble resurfaced for Bobrisky when social media activist Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, called him out over an unpaid debt. In a trending video, VDM claimed a creditor approached him for assistance in recovering ₦4 million that Bobrisky borrowed to secure a private apartment while in prison. After his release, Bobrisky allegedly refused to repay the loan.
VDM also shared an audio clip in which Bobrisky purportedly admitted to paying unnamed EFCC operatives ₦15 million to have the money laundering charges dropped. In the same audio, Bobrisky allegedly claimed he served his six-month sentence in a private flat near the prison after a “mentor” intervened with prison authorities in Abuja.
Following the audio’s circulation, Bobrisky took to Instagram to deny making those claims, asserting that the recording was fake.
