The House of Representatives, on Monday, interrogated officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) regarding allegations that both agencies were bribed by controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, following his conviction for naira abuse in April……CONTINUE READING
During the hearing, both the EFCC and NCoS denied the allegations. The EFCC rejected claims that Bobrisky paid N15 million to drop money laundering charges, while the NCoS stated that Bobrisky served his sentence at Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre, contrary to reports that he was housed in a private apartment.
Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos on April 5, 2024, for naira abuse. On August 5, 2024, he regained his freedom amid allegations of preferential treatment due to his celebrity status. These claims were fueled by an audio recording released by social media influencer Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, in which Bobrisky allegedly admitted to paying N15 million to EFCC officials and arranging to serve his sentence in a private residence through a “godfather” and NCoS officials.
Following the release of the recording, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, ordered an investigation and suspended two senior officials from the Kirikiri Custodial Centres. The House of Representatives also resolved to question Bobrisky, VeryDarkMan, and officials from the EFCC and NCoS.
Appearing before the House committee, Deputy Controller of Corrections Michael Anugwa explained that Bobrisky refused prison rations and arranged for personal meals, a right protected by law. He also noted that Bobrisky was kept in a separate cell due to his unique physical characteristics, such as breasts, which made it difficult to place him with other inmates. Assistant Controller General Ben-Rabbi Freeman corroborated Anugwa’s statements, adding that Bobrisky was transferred to Kirikiri for security reasons.
In response to the allegations, the EFCC maintained that charges were dropped after Bobrisky confessed, and denied receiving any bribe. They urged those making the allegations to provide evidence, including the identity of the officials allegedly involved.
The committee adjourned the hearing and requested that the individual who recorded the audio appear at the next session.
