A viral video shared on Monday showed park workers enticing the elephant back into the zoo with food until it entered, at which point the gates were closed behind it. Eyewitnesses who spoke with Arewa PUNCH in Maiduguri expressed relief at the elephant’s return after it had been missing for 17 days.
“When the flood damaged the zoo and we heard that the animals were roaming the streets, I was careful about my movements. I’m glad the elephant is back,” said Aisha Mohammed, a resident of Maiduguri. “Alhamdulilah, our minds are at rest now while we continue to look for the others.”
Abubakar Usman, another local who witnessed the elephant’s return, noted, “The elephant came back on Friday. It was a joyous moment for us, as the longer it stayed missing, the more our fears grew.”
Abba Modu, a Maiduguri resident, also expressed his happiness over the elephant’s return, stating, “The zoo feels incomplete without that elephant. It was always fun to watch it there. We’re also relieved that there were no reports of the elephant harming anyone while it was missing.”
Despite the positive news regarding the elephant, Arewa PUNCH was unable to reach zoo authorities for updates on the whereabouts of other missing animals. Our correspondent, who visited the zoo, reported that it is currently undergoing renovations, particularly in the damaged areas of the fence and other facilities.
Earlier reports indicated that approximately 80 percent of the animals in the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo died due to the flooding, while others, including crocodiles and snakes, managed to escape.
