In a statement released on Wednesday, the party’s acting chairman, Mr. Emmanuel Otti, instructed party members to obtain their nomination forms exclusively from the Labour Party secretariat in Umuahia, the state capital. He stressed that all official communications concerning the party’s activities must originate from the Caretaker Committee. Any conflicting information should be reported as an act of impersonation.
The statement read, “The attention of the Labour Party, Abia State chapter, has been drawn to a radio announcement made by former chairman Mr. Ceekay Igara, directing the public on where to purchase nomination forms for the party’s primaries ahead of the upcoming Local Government elections in the state.
“The public is hereby advised to disregard this unauthorized and misleading announcement, as Mr. Igara’s tenure, along with that of other members of the state and National Working Committees led by Julius Abure, has expired. The Independent National Electoral Commission has ceased to recognize them. Consequently, the party established a National Caretaker Committee chaired by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman.
“The Labour Party in Abia State is not interested in extorting the public or obtaining money through deception. We are committed to ensuring that the sale of forms and selection of candidates is conducted responsibly, orderly, and peacefully.”
Meanwhile, the Labour Party has outlined its schedule for the Local Government election primaries in the state. Otti announced that the sale of nomination/expression of interest forms would commence on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. The submission of completed forms and the screening of aspirants will take place on Thursday, October 3, while the primary elections for chairmanship and councillorship candidates are set for Friday, October 4, 2024.
