Earlier reports indicated that the accident, which occurred late Tuesday along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, involved a Sienna vehicle carrying 10 passengers, including three children and seven adults. Three additional individuals suffered various injuries in the incident.
According to a statement from Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the collision occurred when a fully loaded Sienna vehicle crashed into a granite-laden truck parked on the road.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “Upon arrival at the scene of the accident at Abule Osun, inward Iyana Iba, it was found that a Toyota Sienna bus, registration number BDG 342 FS, was involved in a collision with a parked SHACMAN truck. The truck was obstructing approximately half of the carriageway, while the Sienna, traveling at high speed, crashed into the rear of the truck.”
He further detailed that the incident resulted in the deaths of three adult males, four adult females, two girls, and one boy, with three others critically injured.
Taofiq noted that an initial investigation showed the granite-laden truck had parked at the construction company’s entrance to await security clearance. The Sienna driver, upon seeing a minibus driving in the wrong direction, swerved to avoid a collision, but the excessive speed led to a loss of control and ultimately the crash.
“We conducted a preliminary investigation and found that the truck was delivering granite to a construction site and had stopped for security clearance. Our findings revealed that the Sienna driver attempted to avoid the minibus driving the wrong way but lost control due to excessive speed,” Taofiq explained.
He also mentioned that a meeting was held with the management of the construction company to address the timing of their operations, urging them to limit truck deliveries during nighttime hours.
Taofiq conveyed the condolences of LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, to the families of the victims, emphasizing the need for motorists to exercise caution on Lagos roads. He stated, “We advised the construction company to manage their operations better during the day to minimize truck activity at night. This accident was avoidable with proper safety measures in place. We urge all drivers to adhere to speed limits to prevent such incidents from recurring.
