Idris made this assertion in Abuja on Thursday during the first international conference organized by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), titled “Interrogating the Root Cause of Violence in the Sahel and Its Impact on Nigeria’s Territorial Integrity.” The event brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to evaluate the challenges posed by violence in the Sahel region and propose viable solutions.
He noted that the Sahel has become a hub of instability characterized by violence, terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking, and arms smuggling, all of which have spillover effects on Nigeria due to its porous borders with the region.
“Nigeria shares extensive and vulnerable borders with several conflict-affected Sahelian countries, exposing us to the consequences of ongoing violence. This situation not only jeopardizes our security but also complicates our ability to maintain effective border control,” Idris stated.
He acknowledged that many experts attribute these challenges to socioeconomic marginalization, weak governance structures, environmental degradation, climate change, transnational organized crime, and illegal arms trafficking. The impact of these conflicts is adversely affecting Nigeria’s economy, internal security, and the overall well-being of its citizens.
Idris pointed out that while socioeconomic marginalization and weak governance are fundamental causes of violence in the Sahel, the Nigerian government is dedicated to addressing these issues both domestically and in collaboration with international partners.
“The violence in the Sahel is not an isolated phenomenon, and no single nation can resolve it independently. Therefore, Nigeria has intensified its engagement with neighboring countries and regional and international partners. We are enhancing joint military operations, including the Multinational Joint Task Force, and supporting initiatives aimed at stabilizing the Sahel region,” he explained.
He further stated that security remains a primary focus of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, with ongoing investments in equipment, manpower, and intelligence gathering to effectively combat insecurity.
“Tackling these challenges will require collaboration among government agencies, international partners, and security experts to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and contribute to lasting peace and stability in the Sahel region,” Idris concluded.
He encouraged the conference attendees to analyze the root causes of armed conflicts in the Sahel and develop innovative solutions to address these challenges.
The First Annual NAN Lecture featured prominent national and international figures, including former Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar, who served as the chairman, and Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas as the guest speaker. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was represented at the event by National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, along with other dignitaries such as Chief of Defense Staff General Christopher Musa, Katsina State Governor Alhaji Umar Dikko Radda, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, and Minister of Steel Development Alhaji Shuaibu Abubakar.
