Tragedy As Woman And Four Grandchildren Lose lives After Eating Pap In Ondo
Tragedy struck the Gaga community in Akure as five members of the same family—an elderly woman and her four grandchildren—died mysteriously after consuming pap. The incident, which occurred at Atayese Street, Oke Aro, Akure, was uncovered on Thursday, October 3, 2024.
According to a family member, Bola, the elderly woman, who was their paternal grandmother, passed away suddenly. The family, assuming it was a natural death due to her old age, took her to the mortuary without suspicion.
After the grandmother’s death, Bola’s sister and her family visited her house to sort out her belongings. While there, they found some processed dried pap in the kitchen, which the children requested to eat. Their mother, Bukola Adeola, prepared the pap for her three children, aged seven, five, and three, along with their 10-year-old cousin.
Shortly after consuming the pap, the children began experiencing severe pain. Alarmed, their parents rushed them to the State Specialist Hospital (now UNIMED Teaching Hospital) in Akure. This is when the family began to suspect that the pap might have been poisoned or contaminated, possibly linked to the grandmother’s sudden death.
Bola expressed frustration with the medical care the children received, blaming the doctors on duty, who were reportedly National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. She recounted overhearing one of the doctors uncertainly asking how many milligrams of medication to administer, suggesting a lack of experience. Despite spending three days in the hospital, all four children eventually passed away, leading the family to believe that their lives could have been saved if they had been properly attended to.
The head of the family, Mr. A. Egunjobi, confirmed the incident and mentioned that the children may have also eaten fish from a pond at their grandmother’s house, which was suspected to be contaminated. Despite the tragic deaths, the family chose not to report the incident to the police, and the children were buried without any investigation or autopsy.
Bukola Adeola, the mother of the deceased children, was too grief-stricken to speak. When asked why the family did not seek to investigate the deaths, Bola responded that there was nothing left to unravel and that they had already buried the children to avoid prolonging their pain.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that the incident had not been reported to them.
