Soldier Arrested For Stabbing Police Officer To Death In LagosNaija News reports that a tragic incident occurred at the Volks bus stop along the Ojo/Iyana-Iba road in Lagos, involving a confrontation between a group of soldiers and a team of policemen. The police officers were reportedly carrying out enforcement duties when they stopped an unregistered T4 Volkswagen commercial bus driving against traffic, operated by a soldier dressed in civilian clothing. An argument ensued, during which the soldier called for backup from fellow soldiers stationed at Ojo Cantonment Barracks.
According to Vanguard, the soldiers arrived and attacked the police officers with weapons. Although a backup police team responded to the situation, Inspector Ganiyu sustained a severe stab wound. He was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, where he later died from his injuries.
Inspector Ganiyuās body has been placed in the LASUTH morgue, while the soldier responsible for the stabbing has been detained at the 9 Brigade in Ikeja Cantonment.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hudenyin, confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Army authorities expressed regret over the incident, assuring the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted. In a statement, Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Deputy Director of Public Relations for the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, said, āThe Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army (NA) regrets the unfortunate incident of October 9, 2024, involving a soldier and a policeman following a traffic violation.ā
He added that the soldier suspected of the offense has been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and further disciplinary action, emphasizing the Armyās commitment to its Code of Conduct and maintaining trust with security agencies and the public.
