Federal Government Launches ₦40,000 Rice Sale Initiative In Ogun StateThe Federal Government has launched the sale of subsidized 50kg bags of rice for ₦40,000 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, aimed at easing the economic strain following the removal of fuel subsidies.

At the launch ceremony in Abeokuta, Governor Dapo Abiodun announced plans to extend the program across the state’s 20 local government areas, with additional subsidized food items such as garri, rice, and beans to be made available at reduced prices. Abiodun emphasized that this initiative would reach the grassroots level, expanding its impact.

He stated that the distribution will be inclusive, targeting civil servants, private sector workers, craftsmen, trade unions, NGOs, student groups, market vendors, and religious organizations. The governor assured the public that measures have been put in place to ensure fairness, with payments made via Point of Sales (PoS) machines, NIN verification, and strict monitoring to prevent fraudulent practices.

Abiodun praised President Bola Tinubu for initiating the scheme, noting the president’s commitment to addressing the rising cost of living. The governor also pointed out that without the fuel market reforms, the country would have spent over ₦11 trillion annually.

The chairman of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners in the state, Chief Waheed Oloyede, commended Governor Abiodun for his continuous support, particularly in disbursing pensioners’ gratuities. Senator Abubakar Kyari, representing Ayo Ajayi, lauded Ogun State for setting a model that the Federal Government plans to replicate in other states, adding that the initiative will help reduce the cost of essential food items across the country.
