On July 24, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the ₦70,000 minimum wage would apply to all workers, including domestic staff. However, Ajaero emphasized the need for clarity regarding who falls under the new minimum wage guidelines.
He remarked, “It is essential to know how many individuals the Minimum Wage Act will cover. Without specific guidance from the National Assembly, confusion is likely to arise. We require a detailed explanation of the coverage, as minimum wage laws typically include various components. So far, there has been no white paper released to clarify this.”
Ajaero noted that, according to the Senate President’s announcement, the new wage is not limited to companies with more than 25 employees. He stated that the NLC is awaiting the formal law to address these concerns before any potential misunderstandings occur. “This means that if you have just one gatekeeper or maid, you are required to pay them ₦70,000. That is the clarification I am seeking,” he added.
