The former Chairman of the Umuahia North Traditional Rulers Council in Abia State, HRM Eze Philip Ajomiwe, has voiced concerns over the recent arrest of Finland-based pro-Biafra activist Simon Ekpa, cautioning that it could aggravate insecurity in the South-East.
In an interview with Vanguard, Eze Ajomiwe emphasized that resolving the region’s issues requires the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), rather than apprehending more agitators.
The monarch highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of unrest through dialogue and equitable measures, stating:
“Arresting Ekpa won’t solve the insecurity in the South-East; it might worsen it. While we advocate for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the government has yet to take action on that.
“Although I do not support some of Ekpa’s statements, his arrest or repatriation will not bring a solution but could escalate tensions. We need a peaceful resolution and must avoid the loss of lives, whether among civilians or security operatives.”
He further compared the situation to that of Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Igboho, who was not repatriated after his arrest in Benin Republic. Eze Ajomiwe urged the government to adopt diplomatic strategies, saying:
“If peace is the goal, the government should release Nnamdi Kanu and address the grievances through negotiation. Escalating arrests will only deepen the crisis.”
