In a statement released on Wednesday, Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, clarified that the free bus services were approved to support residents but have now been put on hold due to operational issues. The services were managed by the Edo City Transport Service (ECTS).
“The earlier announcement regarding the approval of free bus services by Governor Okpebholo should be disregarded,” Itua stated. “The governor has been briefed on operational concerns related to the Edo City Transport Service (ECTS), and as a result, the free bus services have been suspended for now. A new decision will be communicated to the public in due course.”
Meanwhile, the suspension of the service has led to reactions from various quarters, including former Governor Godwin Obaseki, who criticized Okpebholo’s leadership.
Obaseki Responds to Okpebholo’s Administration with Strong Words
Former Governor Godwin Obaseki has dismissed the accusations and blackmail from Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, insisting that they cannot tarnish his legacy. Obaseki, who served as Edo State governor for eight years, emphasized that despite the current administration’s efforts to discredit him, his achievements remain intact.
In a statement issued by Obaseki’s Media Adviser, Crusoe Osagie, the former governor rejected the claims of the Okpebholo-led government, labeling them as “clueless” and accusing the new leadership of engaging in baseless allegations to distract from their lack of a clear development plan.
“No amount of lies or propaganda from Okpebholo’s government can blemish the legacies I left behind,” Osagie said. “In eight years, Obaseki successfully transformed Edo State and set it on a path of growth and prosperity, despite the challenges.”
Osagie also criticized the incumbent administration’s attempts to malign Obaseki’s name, calling them “diversionary tactics” aimed at deflecting attention from their own lack of direction. He reaffirmed that the people of Edo State are perceptive and will not be swayed by what he described as “petty theatrics.”
Obaseki’s supporters remain confident that the former governor’s policies, which led to significant infrastructure development and economic progress in the state, will stand the test of time despite the political mudslinging.
