He lamented that some individuals have no interest in ending the conflict, and instead, they exploit it for personal gain. “Among the population, I cannot say who exactly, but there are some people who don’t want to see the end of this crisis. They are benefiting from it, not only civilians; it cuts across all strata,” Zulum stated. The governor also pointed out that arrests of informants and military personnel attempting to assist insurgents with ammunition have been made.
Additionally, Zulum highlighted the issue of foreign influence, mentioning the porous borders, the fringes of Lake Chad, and the Sambisa Game Reserve, which are being used as safe havens for terrorists.
In his remarks, the governor also discussed the recent displacement of Boko Haram fighters from Chad. He said that after a significant attack on Chadian soldiers, the Chadian government took decisive action, pushing insurgents out of their territory. Many of these insurgents, according to Zulum, have now relocated to Borno State. “Most of them are now in Nigeria, especially in Borno State,” he said.
Despite these challenges, Zulum commended the federal government and the Nigerian military for their efforts in curbing the insurgency. He noted that over 90% of Boko Haram activities in the North-East have been suppressed, although pockets of insurgents remain, particularly in the fringes of Lake Chad, the Sambisa Forest, and the Mandara Hills.
The governor expressed optimism that, through increased collaboration with neighboring countries like Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Mali, terrorism could be completely eradicated within the next two years.
