Both lawmakers have emphasized the bills’ importance, framing them as crucial for fiscal reform and relief for the country’s lower-income groups and small businesses.
Speaking to Punch, Agbese, who represents Ado/Ogbadigbo/Okpokwu Federal Constituency in Benue State, explained, “We are working to rally support among our colleagues because these bills are designed to alleviate the tax burden on poor citizens and small businesses.”
Benson, the representative for Ikorodu Federal Constituency in Lagos State and a strong proponent of the bills, added, “We all recognize the benefits of the proposed reforms, and we are actively lobbying each other to ensure the final version is accepted by all.”
Regarding the delay in advancing the bills, Benson explained, “The bills have sparked significant interest, and we understand the need for broader consultations. As a unified body, we must work together to address contentious issues and negotiate solutions. We believe that in time, these proposed tax reforms will be recognized as a transformative initiative.”
The four key tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, which aims to establish a comprehensive fiscal framework for taxation, and the Tax Administration Bill, designed to create a clearer legal structure for tax collection and reduce disputes.
Also included are the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, which seeks to replace the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act with a new Nigeria Revenue Service, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill, which will establish a tax tribunal and an ombudsman for resolving tax-related issues.
