Soyombo Explains Why He Didn’t Involve The Military In Oil Bunkering Investigation
Soyombo Explains Why He Didn’t Involve The Military In Oil Bunkering InvestigationInvestigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has explained that he deliberately chose not to involve the Nigerian military in his recent investigation into crude oil bunkering in the Niger Delta, citing allegations of collusion between some military personnel and the illegal bunkerers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Soyombo made the revelation on Friday during an interview on Channels Television, where he discussed his controversial investigation. He noted that certain operatives within the military were allegedly complicit in the illegal oil trade, which influenced his decision to avoid involving them in his probe.
“The most important point is that illegal oil bunkerers bribe security operatives across various agencies to facilitate their activities,” Soyombo stated. “The real issue is that those who are supposed to stop bunkering are actually partners and collaborators with the criminals involved in it. That’s why I couldn’t involve the military.”
Soyombo’s investigation gained widespread attention when he was detained by the Nigerian Army for three days. The military initially claimed he was arrested during a raid on an illegal bunkering site. However, his release followed a public outcry after news of his detention spread on social media.
The journalist further claimed that his cover was blown by military personnel, who provided the illegal bunkerers with details about his activities. “These people knew everything about me, even though I didn’t speak to anyone else while I was in detention. They didn’t even let me make a phone call until Friday evening, just before my release. So how did the illegal bunkerers know all this? This vindicates my decision to exclude the military from the beginning,” he added.
While Soyombo criticized certain military officials, he acknowledged that not all personnel were involved in illegal bunkering, and some genuinely wanted to end the practice.
