Current Prices Of Rice, Beans, Tomatoes, And Other Staple Foods For The Week
Current Prices Of Rice, Beans, Tomatoes, And Other Staple Foods For The WeekAs the holiday season approaches, food prices across Nigerian markets are experiencing mixed trends, influenced by supply dynamics, regional harvests, and the ongoing festive demand. A recent market survey offers insights into the current prices of key food staples like rice, beans, tomatoes, and other commodities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Rice Prices Stay High but Stable
The price of a 50kg bag of locally milled rice remains relatively stable but high, ranging from ₦90,000 to ₦95,000, depending on location and quality. Imported rice, which has become less available due to import restrictions, is priced higher, with a 50kg bag selling for ₦100,000 to ₦105,000.
In major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, vendors cite increased transportation costs and the rising demand as reasons behind the high prices. However, rural areas with easier access to local farms have reported slightly lower prices.
Beans See Significant Price Drop
Beans prices have dropped considerably across the country, with a 50kg bag now costing around ₦130,000, a sharp decrease from ₦250,000 in previous months. This price reduction is attributed to a bumper harvest in the northern regions, which are the primary suppliers of beans.
Retail prices for smaller quantities have also declined, making beans more affordable for households ahead of the holiday season.
Tomatoes and Vegetables Show Moderate Decline
The price of tomatoes has dropped moderately, with a basket now costing between ₦60,000 and ₦65,000, down from ₦80,000 just a few weeks ago. This price cut is linked to a good harvest in states like Kano and Kaduna, which are major tomato producers.
Other vegetables, however, have shown mixed price trends. Onions are priced at ₦35,000 per bag, while rodo pepper (scotch bonnet) has seen a significant price surge, now costing ₦45,000 per bag, up from ₦15,000 earlier this year. The rise in pepper prices is attributed to off-season supply challenges.
Palm Oil Prices Surge Ahead of the Festivities
Palm oil prices have surged in anticipation of the Christmas season. A 25-litre keg, which previously sold for ₦37,000, is now priced at ₦54,000 in most markets. The price hike is mainly due to transportation issues and increased demand during the holidays.
Spaghetti and Other Staples Become More Affordable
Other food staples, such as spaghetti, have seen price reductions. A carton of spaghetti, which once sold for ₦35,000, now costs ₦23,000. This drop is linked to improved supply chains and reduced importation costs.
What to Expect as the Festive Season Approaches
The festive season generally brings a surge in demand for food items, which could lead to further price fluctuations in the coming weeks. Traders anticipate a slight increase in prices as Christmas nears, primarily due to heightened consumer demand. However, the abundant supply of beans and tomatoes may help keep prices for these items relatively stable.
For families preparing for the holidays, experts suggest purchasing staples early to avoid potential price hikes as the holiday draws closer. While some commodities remain expensive, there are opportunities for savings on specific items with careful planning and timely purchases.
