The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a statement denying rumors that its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, passed away in London.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to INEC, Professor Yakubu is in good health, with his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarifying that the INEC Chairman has not traveled to London in the past two years.
The statement read: “We have been made aware of false reports circulating on social media claiming that INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, died in a London hospital. This story first emerged on Monday, December 9, 2024.
“We urge the public to ignore this baseless rumor. Prof. Yakubu is alive and well. He has not been to London in the last two years. He was actively involved in an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
“He also led a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday, December 12, 2024, both of which were widely covered by the media.
“Let the public recall that a similar fake story was spread in 2021, and now, three years later, the same unfounded claim is being repeated.
“We ask those spreading these rumors to consider the harmful impact they have, not just on the individual involved, but also on society as a whole.”
INEC reiterated its commitment to working with the media to combat the spread of fake news and misinformation.
