According to INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Professor Mahmood is in good health and has not traveled to London in the past two years. Oyekanmi added that Mahmood was present at an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, and chaired a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners the following day, December 12, 2024. Both events were widely covered in the media.

INEC condemned the spread of the baseless rumor, which first emerged on Monday, December 9, 2024, and noted that a similar false claim had circulated in 2021. The commission also highlighted the potential harm such misinformation causes, both to individuals and society at large.

“The public is urged to disregard this malicious story. Prof. Yakubu is alive and well, and the rumors should be dismissed as baseless,” INEC stated.
