In a Christmas Day interview, Tchiani claimed that Nigeria had provided a base for French soldiers near Lake Chad and set up training camps for terrorists in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states to disrupt Niger’s stability.
The Nigerian government quickly dismissed the allegations as unfounded. National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, were among the officials who debunked Tchiani’s claims.
Tchiani’s remarks have sparked a storm of criticism on social media, with many Nigeriens questioning the veracity of his statements. Some have accused the president of trying to shift attention away from the failures of his administration since he ousted his predecessor, Mohamed Bazoum, in a palace coup 17 months ago.
Maidalili Namu, a Nigerien commentator, voiced his discontent on the Muduba Mugani podcast, stating, “The regime is being run by 16 generals who are leading the country into ruin.”
“You’ve been in power for 17 months, confined to the villa, and fed with misinformation that clouds your judgment,” Namu remarked, according to PR Nigeria.
Namu further criticized Tchiani for creating tensions both regionally and internationally, causing friction with Niger’s neighbors and other countries. He added, “When it was announced that you would address the nation on December 25, 2024, in Hausa, Zabarma, and French, the prevailing rumor was that your speech would lack originality, filled only with the usual condemnations of France, ECOWAS, Nigeria, and others as our enemies.”
Namu also expressed frustration with the repetitive nature of Tchiani’s statements, saying, “What’s most frustrating is that you confirmed their predictions. Some even started counting how many times you mentioned France, Nigeria, and ECOWAS, claiming they are plotting against Niger.”
“You’ve accused many countries, both in Africa and beyond, of undermining Niger, leading some to question your fitness for leadership,” Namu continued. “Your diplomatic failures are obvious. You’ve insulted leaders from various countries, implicating at least 20 nations in a conspiracy against Niger, many of whom we have no direct relations with.”
He went on to highlight that the real issues affecting Nigeriens, such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, fuel scarcity, and rising living costs, were ignored. Instead, Tchiani focused on external threats, including unsubstantiated claims of terrorist training camps run by the French.
“You claimed that camps for training terrorists have been set up in Burkina Faso and Niger, predicting that by the end of 2024, at least 400 terrorists will be trained under French supervision,” Namu concluded.
