FG Hints At Possible Concession Of Lagos International Airport – Keyamo Speaks Out
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has clarified that the concession of Lagos International Airport remains a possibility.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Keyamo’s statement follows a misleading headline from a national daily that misrepresented his remarks.
Speaking at the Aviation Unions Stakeholders’ Forum in Lagos on Friday, Keyamo emphasized that discussions on the concession were ongoing, but he would review the necessary documents before presenting them at a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
“I have always maintained that nothing will happen without the full involvement of the unions, and workers’ interests will be safeguarded. As of now, I am not even aware of the details of the negotiations. The decision on whether to continue with the firms involved or assess their capacity will eventually fall to me, as I will be the one to take the concession document to FEC,” Keyamo stated.
He further assured stakeholders that he would thoroughly examine all documentation, business cases, and agreements before making a decision, ensuring that union concerns were addressed.
To maintain transparency, Keyamo instructed his Special Assistant on Public-Private Partnerships and the Permanent Secretary to involve the unions in all discussions, regardless of the stage of negotiations.
Following the misleading headline, the minister clarified that the federal government might still proceed with the concession even after refurbishing the airport.
He explained that while the government is exploring funding options to rehabilitate the facility, this would not prevent future concessioning for improved management and operations.
“This headline does not reflect my speech at the Stakeholders’ Forum in Lagos. What I said is that the Federal Government is considering sourcing funds to fully refurbish Lagos International Airport. The funding model is yet to be finalized, but even if the government invests its own resources in the rehabilitation, it does not rule out the possibility of concessioning the airport for better management,” Keyamo clarified in a post on his handle on Monday.
