Eyewitnesses described the scene as overwhelming, with traders and residents left in shock. Fortunately, the swift response from the Oyo State Fire Service, alongside firefighting teams from SUMAL and SWEETCO, helped contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
As of the time of reporting, the full extent of the damage remains unclear.
A source informed The Nation that the fire’s impact might have been reduced if there had been a fire station located within the market.
Yemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, stating that firefighting teams were still on the scene working to control the flames. He expressed gratitude to the management of SWEETCO and SUMAL for providing their trucks and crews to assist in the efforts.
He also mentioned, “Our men are currently working at Alesinloye Market. We appreciate SWEETCO and SUMAL for their support. However, due to logistical reasons, the management is unable to respond to individual questions at this moment.”
