DisCos Invasion: DHQ Pushes For Military Consultation Amid Growing National Debate

The allegations stemmed from claims that suspected Nigerian Air Force personnel invaded the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) and assaulted staff over a reported power surge in their barracks. Similar claims were made regarding the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, where suspected Nigerian Army personnel reportedly beat staff over a power surge in their barracks.

In response to an editorial that condemned the military’s actions, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, dismissed the criticisms as misleading. He stated that the editorial’s assertion that “the military has continued to ride roughshod on civilians and private enterprises” was a distortion of the facts.

Brigadier General Gusau argued that the editorial unfairly targeted the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and the service chiefs, suggesting they tacitly supported impunity. He expressed dissatisfaction with the editorial’s failure to consult with the military leadership before passing such a judgment.

“It would have been more appropriate to engage with the military hierarchy before making such sweeping claims,” he said. He also emphasized that the Nigerian Armed Forces (AFN), under the leadership of General Musa, remains dedicated to upholding the Constitution and is committed to thorough investigations and the disciplining of any military personnel found at fault.
