During a virtual meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima stated that malnutrition poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s national security and economic productivity. He noted that unless tangible results are achieved, the discussions, committees, and even the Council’s efforts would be futile.

Describing malnutrition as a silent emergency, Shettima stressed that it affects cognitive development, weakens the workforce, and slows national growth. He called for an urgent, coordinated effort that brings together MDAs, development partners, and the private sector for sustainable solutions.

The Vice President also highlighted the critical role of data and evidence-based assessments in tackling the issue, emphasizing the importance of empowering institutions responsible for food and nutrition governance. He pointed to the Nutrition 774 Initiative, a grassroots-driven program, as a key effort to institutionalize nutrition at the local government level.

Shettima also underscored the need for government leadership in securing the necessary funding for nutrition interventions, asserting that global commitments are meaningless unless translated into domestic action. He concluded by reminding stakeholders that both the world and the Nigerian people are watching the country’s efforts to combat malnutrition.

At the meeting, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, and Secretary to the Council, Emeka Vitalis Obi, both emphasized the need for collaborative, multisectoral efforts to address food security and malnutrition in Nigeria.
