Four men who were previously arrested over the arson attack on the Rivers State House of Assembly have alleged that their lives remain under threat despite being discharged and acquitted by the court.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, the men—Chime Ezebalike, Kenneth Kpasa, Prince Oladele Lukman, and MacPherson Olumini—claimed that their ordeal was politically motivated, linked to forces opposed to suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Chief of Staff, Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie.
Ezebalike, speaking on behalf of the group, said they were compelled to break their silence and clarify the events surrounding the Assembly fire. He alleged that they were tortured and offered ₦200 million to falsely implicate Edison Ehie and others close to Governor Fubara.
“Our only offence was refusing to falsely accuse Edison Ehie and others of masterminding the Assembly fire,” Ezebalike said.
He recounted that from December 2023 to January 2024, they endured unlawful arrests, intimidation, beatings, and psychological torment.
“Between December 5, 2023, and January 16, 2024, we were subjected to physical and mental torture. Despite our innocence, we were detained and even offered bribes to falsely confess or trade our freedom for lies,” he added.
Arrests and Alleged Political Targeting
Ezebalike explained that he, Kenneth, and Oladele were known associates of Edison Ehie and Hon. Sokari Goodboy, while MacPherson Olumini was an innocent civilian caught in the crossfire.
The first arrest occurred on December 5, 2023, when Oladele was picked up arbitrarily. Eleven days later, on December 16, Chime and MacPherson were apprehended at Ogbakiri Junction along the East-West Road after attending a funeral in Ahoada.
Then on January 5, 2024, Kenneth Kpasa was allegedly forcefully taken from the GRA area of Port Harcourt by heavily armed men in a convoy of at least three Hilux trucks.
