Nigeria Police Beyond Redemption!” – Inibehe Effiong Explodes After Quadri’s Ordeal
Nigerian human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, who represented Quadri Alabi, the teenager recently acquitted of armed robbery charges, has strongly criticized the Lagos State Police Command over their statement regarding his client.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The police had claimed that Quadri was identified by members of his community as being involved in a robbery incident. However, Effiong described the police statement as false, inflammatory, and lacking accountability, firmly rejecting all allegations made against Quadri.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Effiong emphasized that Quadri, a known supporter of Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi, was unjustly detained in police custody for a week before being taken to court.
He argued that the police’s reaction and handling of the case demonstrated the deep-rooted flaws within the force, stating it as evidence that the Nigerian Police may be beyond reform.
Effiong’s statement read in part:
“We are aware of the false and inflammatory press release issued by the Lagos State Police Command, which tried in vain to mislead the public regarding the trumped-up charges against Quadri Alabi.
The claims made are not only absurd but reflect poorly on the police’s integrity. It’s shameful to see a law enforcement agency disseminating fake news about an innocent Nigerian youth.
The police alleged that Quadri was arrested for street fighting and identified by some community members and alleged victims. This is a complete fabrication.
First, contrary to the police’s claim, Quadri is not 18 but 17 years old, as clearly stated on his birth certificate and confirmed by his mother. He was born on September 29, 2007.
Second, he was never involved in any street fighting, nor did he rob or damage anyone’s property.
Third, no victim ever identified Quadri. We challenge the police to disclose when and where this supposed identification took place. No identification parade was conducted, which is required under the law—especially since the alleged crime occurred at around 10 PM.”
