VDM was taken into custody on Friday, May 2, 2025, shortly after visiting GTBank with his mother to report an alleged unauthorized deduction from her bank account.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, speaking with BBC News Pidgin on Monday, May 5, explained that the arrest was based on multiple complaints submitted by different individuals.
“We arrested him in connection with several allegations made by petitioners,” Oyewale stated.
When asked if the arrest was tied to the GTBank incident, Oyewale clarified that the case involved various petitioners unrelated to the bank. He emphasized the agency’s responsibility to protect complainants.
Oyewale further disclosed that VDM will be released once he meets his bail conditions and added that the matter will proceed to court in due course.
“We’ll grant him bail once conditions are fulfilled, and legal proceedings will follow as required by law,” he said.
In response to the arrest, popular Nigerian artists Davido and Skales have spoken out in support of VeryDarkMan. Davido praised Nigerians for rallying around the activist, describing the solidarity as a reflection of youth unity and social impact.
Taking to his account, Davido wrote:
“Amid all the noise, it’s heartening to see that doing good still matters. The support for VDM is inspiring. It encourages us to keep fighting for the people. FREE MY GUY.”
Skales also weighed in, urging young Nigerians to stay alert and defend their rights. He further called for a boycott of GTBank in solidarity with VDM.
