Tension Peaks As Fubara, Wike Hold Surprise Meeting In Abuja Over Rivers Crisis

According to reports obtained by Daily Post, the meeting occurred on Monday at Wike’s residence in Abuja.

While a photo of the duo made rounds recently on social media, a source familiar with the matter clarified that the image was outdated.
“The photo is from a previous encounter, but I can confirm that Fubara visited the Minister this past Monday,” the source disclosed.

The meeting is seen as part of continued reconciliation efforts to heal the rift between Fubara and his estranged political mentor, Wike.

Their relationship deteriorated soon after Fubara took office in 2023, with disputes over control of the state’s political machinery escalating and ultimately splitting the Rivers State House of Assembly.

In an attempt to prevent the crisis from spiraling into a major security threat—especially amid warnings from Niger Delta militants—President Bola Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in the state on March 18, 2025, suspending Fubara from office.

To ensure governance continuity, Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator to oversee the state during the suspension.

Despite his suspension, Fubara has made several strategic moves, including visits to President Tinubu in both London and Lagos, and continued engagements with Wike.

In a conciliatory tone, Wike recently referred to Fubara as his “son,” indicating a willingness to mend ties.

However, nearly three months into the suspension, Fubara has yet to publicly extend his reconciliation efforts to other key political stakeholders in Rivers State, as Wike had recommended.
