₦5 Billion Defamation Drama Ends: Court Sides With Sunday Igboho, Dismisses Gani Adams’ Case

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has dismissed a ₦5 billion defamation lawsuit filed by the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, against Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Not only was the suit thrown out, but the court also ordered Adams to pay ₦500,000 in legal costs to Igboho.

Adams had accused Igboho of unlawfully recording a private phone conversation and releasing it to the public without his consent. Represented by his counsel, Sikiru Akinrele, Adams claimed the act violated his constitutional right to privacy under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution. He sought a declaration that the recording was unlawful and demanded ₦5 billion in damages for the alleged breach of his fundamental rights.

However, during a hearing on April 30, 2025, Igboho’s legal representative, Junaid Sanusi, argued that Adams’ suit was procedurally flawed, as the supporting affidavit was neither signed by Adams himself nor by an authorised representative.

In a ruling delivered on Thursday, July 3, Justice O.T. Ademola-Salami upheld the objection, declaring the affidavit invalid. The judge further held that, even if the affidavit had been valid, Adams failed to provide sufficient evidence linking Igboho to the recording or its release.

“In the absence of credible proof that the defendant intercepted or disseminated the claimant’s private conversation, the court cannot grant the reliefs sought,” the judge ruled.
