The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed its unity in the wake of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s death, stating that his loyalists remain ideologically committed to the ruling party despite rising speculation about possible defections from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking to Punch, APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, acknowledged that Buhari’s passing has created a significant vacuum in the party. However, he dismissed suggestions that CPC loyalists might defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying such a move was unlikely.

“No, they won’t join the ADC. That’s impossible,” Ibrahim asserted. “They are individuals with a distinct ideology, and they feel at home in the APC. While the political atmosphere within the party may shift, it won’t weaken the APC. Instead, it will inspire sober reflection and internal restructuring.”

Ibrahim revealed that the APC is already working to reconcile internal differences and strengthen party cohesion moving forward.

Former Minister of Communications and longtime CPC member, Adebayo Shittu, also debunked rumours linking him to the ADC. He confirmed he remains a member of the APC and is preparing to contest the Oyo State governorship election on the party’s platform in 2027.

“There’s no way I’m leaving the APC,” Shittu said. “I’m planning to run for governor in 2027 under the APC, and I’m confident of winning the ticket and the election. Buhari’s passing won’t break the party. Some CPC elements may leave, but more people are actually joining.”

Former Secretary General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Anthony Sani, echoed similar sentiments. He dismissed the possibility of major shifts within the APC, saying Buhari’s supporters would not betray his legacy.

“I don’t foresee any significant change in the APC’s direction due to Buhari’s death. He made the party his political home, and his loyalists will honour that,” Sani noted.
He also expressed doubt about the strength and potential of any emerging coalition, citing the complexities of zoning and a lack of clear policy alternatives.

“The zoning arrangement doesn’t favour any northern support for Peter Obi, and there’s little appetite for backing Atiku again,” he added.

However, not all voices are in agreement.

President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Yerima Shettima, warned that Buhari’s death could lead to a leadership vacuum in the APC, and that failure to preserve his legacy might destabilize the party.

“Buhari’s leadership was a mix of loyalty and division. His passing might leave a gap. If the APC fails to address public dissatisfaction, it risks losing its grip and relevance,” Shettima cautioned.

As the APC navigates the post-Buhari era, party insiders and observers agree that how the leadership handles internal tensions and honors Buhari’s legacy will shape the future of the ruling party.
