State Coordinator Onifade Olaoluwa Joshua confirmed the development in Ilorin on Thursday, noting that the decision was taken with the approval of the state government following concerns over corps members’ safety.

“We are fully prepared to host the orientation course, and the welfare of participants will be safeguarded. Soldiers and other security personnel will be deployed to guarantee the safety of corps members throughout the three-week exercise,” Onifade assured.

According to him, prospective corps members are expected to report to the temporary orientation camp between September 24 and October 14. He also disclosed that a team from the NYSC headquarters would soon inspect the new venue to ensure it meets required standards.

The relocation comes in the wake of worsening insecurity in parts of Kwara North, particularly Edu and Patigi LGAs, where repeated bandit attacks in recent months have left dozens dead, kidnapped, or displaced. Many rural communities in the region have fled their homes.

Concerns over safety intensified in August when soldiers at Yikpata camp ordered corps members indoors after reports of suspicious movements around the area.

Onifade expressed gratitude to both federal and state governments for their support in safeguarding corps members, while urging parents and guardians to remain calm.

The Yikpata camp has long hosted NYSC orientation programmes in Kwara, but its isolated location and growing insecurity in the North Central region made it increasingly vulnerable. Banditry in Kwara, Niger, and Kogi has surged in recent months, with Edu and Patigi emerging as flashpoints—prompting the authorities to relocate the exercise to Ilorin, where security presence is stronger.
