Gumi has been highly vocal following the U.S.-led airstrikes in Sokoto State, which were carried out in coordination with the Nigerian government to target ISIS and Lakurawa terrorist groups. Despite the operation, Gumi has continued to criticize the strikes in multiple commentaries.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Igbokwe claimed that Gumi appears to be siding with bandits and even meeting with heavily armed criminals. He wrote, “Is Sheikh Gumi above the law? I have heard him speaking in favour of the bandits. I have seen him having a meeting with well-armed bandits. He speaks as if he is their commander. His actions and deeds suggest that he is above the law.”
Similarly, Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist Deji Adeyanju condemned Gumi’s remarks on the airstrikes. Posting on , Adeyanju said Gumi should not be lamenting if the U.S. strikes failed to kill any ISIS terrorists in Sokoto.
He wrote, “If the Donald Trump airstrike against Nigerian ISIS didn’t kill any terrorists, why is Gumi crying? Should he not be happy that all his colleagues are still alive? Why the tears? We need more collaborative efforts between the U.S. and Nigeria to combat these barbaric terrorists terrorizing our nation.”
