The England striker netted his fourth goal in three games, helping Villa bounce back strongly from their recent defeat at Arsenal. The win marked Villa Park’s 11th consecutive league victory, their longest streak in 36 years.
John McGinn was instrumental, scoring twice as Villa climbed to second place in the Premier League, 12 points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea. Morgan Gibbs-White briefly gave Forest hope with a neat finish, but it was little more than a fleeting respite.
Forest’s struggles deepened with a fourth straight league defeat, a run that had already ended Steve Cooper’s tenure as head coach. Sean Dyche’s side now sit just four points above the relegation zone and face a crucial clash against West Ham and former manager Nuno Espirito Santo on Tuesday.
Villa dominated early and might have taken the lead sooner if not for a fine save from Forest goalkeeper John Victor. As halftime approached, Watkins connected with a pass from Morgan Rogers and fired a precise 20-yard strike to put the hosts ahead.
The advantage doubled shortly after the break when McGinn scored again. Forest responded through Gibbs-White, who calmly reduced the deficit, but their hopes unraveled moments later. A costly mistake by their goalkeeper left the net empty, allowing McGinn to finish from 35 yards.
Watkins’ form has revived a season that once looked uncertain. He scored only once in his first 19 appearances and had been left out of England’s squad in November after withdrawing from October duty due to injury. Questions remained about his chances of making the summer World Cup squad.
Those doubts are quickly fading. The 30-year-old has scored six times in his last eight matches and celebrated his 250th appearance for Villa with another key contribution. Since joining Brentford in 2020, Watkins has consistently delivered in front of goal, and he is proving crucial once again when it matters most.
His partnership with Rogers continues to flourish. The duo combined for Watkins’ opener and have now contributed to 10 Premier League goals together since last season, the most of any pairing in the division.
