According to Red Cross officials and local authorities, the assailants killed at least 162 people, marking the deadliest armed attack in Nigeria so far this year.
In a statement issued Wednesday night, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said Tinubu directed the new military command to lead “Operation Savannah Shield” to confront the terrorists and protect vulnerable communities.
Onanuga added that the president “condemned the cowardly and barbaric attack” and described the gunmen as “heartless for targeting soft, defenseless communities in their campaign of terror.”
“President Tinubu expressed outrage that the attackers slaughtered community members who rejected their extremist indoctrination, choosing instead to practice Islam peacefully, without violence,” the statement read.
“It is commendable that these community members, though Muslims, refused to be coerced into a radical belief that promotes violence over dialogue and peace,” it added.
The president also called for close coordination between federal and state agencies to provide relief to affected residents and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
“President Tinubu prayed for the souls of the deceased and extended condolences to the families, as well as the people and government of Kwara State,” Onanuga concluded.
