The latest advisory was published on the Smartraveller platform, managed by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which provides travel guidance for over 175 destinations and assigns overall risk levels for each.
According to the advisory, Australians are urged to reconsider any travel to Nigeria, as the security situation across the country remains volatile and unpredictable.
“We continue to advise that you reconsider your need to travel to Nigeria due to the threat of terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, and the risk of civil unrest. Higher levels of risk apply in some areas. There is a high risk of terrorist attacks nationwide. Always remain alert, particularly in public places, and avoid demonstrations, rallies, and large gatherings, which can occur suddenly and may turn violent,” the advisory stated.
The government specifically warned against travel to Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara states, and the Federal Capital Territory (excluding Abuja), citing the ongoing threats of terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, and civil unrest.
The advisory highlighted that terrorist attacks could target public locations such as markets, hotels, transport hubs, places of worship, and government buildings. Kidnapping remains a significant threat, with foreigners previously targeted for ransom.
It also warned that civil unrest, protests, and strikes can erupt with little warning and may turn violent, further complicating travel safety.
