Speaking with State House correspondents on Friday after paying a visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the former Edo State governor said he came to offer New Year greetings and to congratulate the President on what he described as Trump’s glowing remarks about the First Lady at a recent event in the United States.
“I came to greet Mr President. I had not seen him since the beginning of 2026, so I wished him a happy New Year,” Oshiomhole said.
He noted that Trump, whom he described as one of the world’s most powerful leaders, publicly recognised Nigeria’s First Lady, describing her as a respected and responsible woman and acknowledging her role as a Christian pastor. He added that Trump invited her to stand for recognition, drawing applause and projecting a positive image of Nigeria on the global stage.
Oshiomhole said the moment was a source of national pride and suggested that critics would have reacted differently if the scenario had played out unfavourably for the government.
According to him, the gesture also underscored Nigeria’s religious coexistence, pointing out that while President Tinubu is a Muslim, his wife is a Christian pastor, a reality Trump openly celebrated.
“Trump understands that Nigeria’s president is a Muslim, yet he openly acknowledged and celebrated his Christian wife. That, to me, shows that there is no conflict between the Quran and the Bible,” Oshiomhole said, adding that it was a positive message for all Nigerians.
He concluded by urging citizens to remain united and hopeful, stressing the need to work collectively to address the country’s challenges rather than speaking negatively about it.
“We must not talk down our country. We have challenges, but together we will fix them, and they are already being addressed,” he said.
