Senate Showdown: Akpabio Takes Swipe At Former Lawmaker Over Anti-Godfather Comments
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticised politicians who publicly denounce godfatherism but privately engage in it.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Saturday at the launch of The Burdens of Legislators in Nigeria, a book authored by former Senator Effiong Bob, held at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja, Akpabio stressed that credibility in opposing godfatherism must be demonstrated through personal conduct.
Highlighting the contradictions of some political actors, he argued that it is inconsistent to condemn godfatherism while benefiting from it.
In a pointed remark directed at an unnamed former lawmaker, Akpabio suggested that if the politician truly opposes godfatherism, he should consider withdrawing his son from the National Assembly.
He said, “I understand that members of the House of Assembly include the son of a distinguished senator. So when I heard that he was against godfatherism, I thought, perhaps he would start by withdrawing his son from the House of Assembly.
“You cannot publicly condemn something on one hand and practice it on the other; that is simply approbating and reprobating.”
Despite the critique, Akpabio acknowledged the former lawmaker’s son’s performance in the legislature.
“He should continue. He’s now serving his second term and has established himself as one of the leaders in the House of Assembly,” he added.
