The officers were reportedly taken into custody after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting public outrage and calls for disciplinary measures.
According to reports, the victim, a beverage seller, was allegedly stopped, harassed, and handcuffed by the officers while returning from Relief Market, where he had gone to purchase drinks using his bus.
The incident is said to have occurred around the busy Upper Iweka axis of the Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway over the weekend.
In the viral video, the victim’s wife recounted that her husband was stopped under the Upper Iweka flyover and asked by the officers to produce his vehicle documents. She stated that he presented the required papers, which were verified to be valid.
Despite this, she alleged that the officers detained him, seized his vehicle documents, and demanded ₦500,000 for his release.
According to her account, the man eventually pleaded with the officers and transferred ₦200,000 through a PoS operator to avoid being taken into custody.
The PoS operator was reportedly based in the Okpoko area near Onitsha, the commercial centre of Anambra State. A voice-over in the viral video further alleged that the officers took the victim to the PoS operator to complete the payment.
The narrator also claimed that such demands were a regular occurrence in the area, alleging that motorists and other individuals were frequently compelled to make payments to avoid harassment.
Reacting to the development, the police command acknowledged the viral footage and confirmed that the matter is under investigation.
In a statement released on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, had ordered the detention of the six officers pending the outcome of the investigation.
He disclosed that those involved include two Assistant Superintendents of Police and four Inspectors. He also noted that the money allegedly taken from the victim has been refunded.
Ikenga further stated that senior officers connected to the incident have been issued queries, while statements from other officers involved have been obtained as part of the ongoing investigation.
The police spokesperson added that steps are also being taken to apprehend the PoS operator believed to have facilitated the transaction, noting that the person’s involvement may indicate possible conspiracy.
He said the command has invited the victim to come forward and provide additional information that could assist investigators and guide further disciplinary action.
Ikenga assured the public that the command is treating the matter with seriousness and promised that updates on the investigation and any disciplinary measures would be made public as the process continues.
