Reports indicate that more than 200 civilians may have lost their lives in the incident.

The military, however, maintained that the area served as a logistics base for fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province, stating that the operation was carried out following extensive intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

It added that the strike was based on confirmed intelligence showing the movement of motorcycles and gun trucks believed to be linked to suspected terrorists gathering in the location.

Despite this, local sources and emergency officials have challenged the outcome, with the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency confirming that civilians were among those affected, describing the incident as an accidental strike.

Responding to a social media post by radio broadcaster Osasu Suave—who questioned whether the images circulating online resembled a market—Olusegun argued that individuals engaging in business with terrorists should be regarded as legitimate military targets.

The broadcaster had asked whether the scene truly looked like a marketplace.

In reply, Olusegun stated that anyone involved in dealings with terrorists cannot be classified as civilians but as valid targets for military operations.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters reiterated that Jilli village had long been identified as a key logistics corridor and meeting point for insurgents.
