Obasanjo made the remarks in an interview with News Central, where he reflected on the difficult experience he endured during military rule under the late General Sani Abacha. He was detained in 1995 and placed under strict restrictions during the period.

He explained that several individuals supported him during that time and helped ensure his safety despite the tense political climate. He specifically mentioned the current Inspector-General of Police, crediting him as one of those who contributed to his survival while under house arrest.

According to Obasanjo, the experience remains one of the most challenging phases of his life, adding that he has not forgotten those who showed him support and compassion during that period. He noted the importance of recognising people who stand by others in moments of hardship.

He said: “Current IGP, I have to in a special way acknowledge you because maybe the reason I am alive today is because you are one of those who kept me alive when I was under house arrest.”

Beyond the personal reflection, the former president also spoke on Nigeria’s security challenges, calling for the establishment of state police as a solution to growing insecurity.

He argued that decentralised policing would enable officers to better understand local environments and respond more effectively to threats, helping to prevent crimes before they escalate.

Obasanjo maintained that Nigeria requires practical reforms to address insecurity and reiterated that state policing remains a viable option to strengthen the country’s security architecture.
