A source at the Presidential Villa told The Nation that the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Special Adviser to the President on Political and Other Matters, Ibrahim Masari, held discussions with key National Assembly leaders.

Those present included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

According to the source, the engagement with National Assembly leaders was followed by a separate meeting between the Presidential Supervision Team on APC primaries and members of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF).

The meetings were reportedly convened after President Bola Tinubu received multiple petitions alleging attempts by some governors to dominate or influence National Assembly primaries in APC-controlled states.

“The President has received several complaints about attempts by governors to take control of National Assembly primaries in APC states. The situation is already generating tension,” the source said.

The source further explained that the Presidential Supervision Team was established to promote peace, coordinate the process, oversee primaries, and manage disputes before, during, and after the exercises.

It added that where consensus cannot be reached, President Tinubu may direct the party to conduct open, transparent, and credible primaries for all aspirants.

“Where there is no consensus, the President will insist on transparent and fair primaries,” the source said.

The source also noted that the team is supporting the APC National Working Committee in resolving emerging challenges, adding that more consultations are expected.

“Thursday’s meeting is not the end; more engagements will follow. However, the final responsibility rests with the President,” it added.
