He made the declaration on Saturday at the Bauchi Government House during a meeting with political stakeholders in the state, which followed a closed-door discussion. The National Chairman of the Allied Peoples Movement, Yusuf Dantalle, was also present at the event where the governor confirmed his move.
Before his departure, Bala Mohammed served as the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, a key position that coordinated the activities of PDP governors nationwide.
His defection reportedly also involved supporters aligned with the Tanimu Turaki-led faction within the PDP structure in Bauchi State.
The earlier meeting was said to have brought together major political actors in the state, though details of their discussions were not disclosed.
In a related development, Bala Mohammed also stated that he would not be contesting the presidential race, noting that the PDP had zoned the ticket to the South.
He explained that he would instead seek election into the Senate to represent Bauchi South.
“I am not contesting for the presidency. The party has agreed to zone it to the South in the interest of fairness.
“However, based on the request of my people, I will be contesting for the Bauchi South senatorial seat to continue serving and to support our candidates,” he said.
