The former Anambra State governor said his decisions to leave parties were largely influenced by internal crises and prolonged legal disputes within the political platforms.
Obi made the remarks on Thursday during a visit to the permanent site of the University on the Niger, where he donated ₦25 million to support the institution.
Speaking during the visit, Obi stressed that he does not leave political parties without valid reasons, insisting that his actions are guided by principles and the unstable nature of many political parties in Nigeria.
The former presidential candidate recently dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). He explained that he has repeatedly found himself in parties plagued by endless court cases and unresolved internal conflicts.
According to Obi, he faced similar challenges during his time in the Labour Party and later encountered the same issues in the ADC.
He added that he often became the main target whenever crises erupted within the parties, making it difficult for him to remain.
“I have never left any political party just for the sake of leaving. I walk away when I see persistent conflict and unresolved crises. In the Labour Party, there was endless litigation, and in the ADC, I faced similar challenges. In many situations, I became the target, and I had no choice but to move on,” Obi stated.
He also criticised the state of politics in the country, arguing that many political parties are more interested in winning power than building strong democratic structures.
Obi called for improved internal democracy, tolerance and better conflict management within political parties across Nigeria.
