The victim was reportedly shot dead in broad daylight on Sunday in an incident the governor described as both brazen and cold-blooded.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, Okpebholo described the attack as a direct threat to public safety and a violation of human dignity.
“The brazen and cold-blooded killing on a day regarded as sacred by many is an affront to human dignity, a threat to public safety, and an attack on everything this administration stands for,” the statement read.
“It is completely unacceptable.”
The governor expressed sympathy to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased, whose life he said was tragically cut short by violence.
He assured residents that the state government would not allow the matter to go unresolved, promising that those behind the attack would be identified and prosecuted.
According to the statement, the Edo State Police Command has already launched an investigation into the incident, while security agencies are working to track down those responsible.
“They may run, but they cannot hide forever,” the statement added.
Okpebholo also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fighting cult-related violence and other criminal activities across Edo State.
He noted that the government has intensified security operations in areas known for cult clashes, leading to several arrests and prosecutions of suspected cult members.
The governor further highlighted ongoing collaboration between the state government and security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army.
According to the statement, the government has also continued to work with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and civil society organisations to curb cultism and violent crime.
In addition, the administration said it is supporting rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives aimed at helping vulnerable youths avoid cult recruitment.
The governor stated that the latest incident highlights the need for continued efforts in tackling insecurity and violent crime in the state.
The Edo State Government also urged members of the public with useful information about the killing to report to security agencies, assuring residents that all information provided would be treated confidentially.
“Edo State will not be a sanctuary for criminals,” Okpebholo declared.
“Those who carry arms and terrorise innocent people will face the full consequences of the law.
