The recovery represents a significant milestone in efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the occurrence.
The aircraft, a Bombardier Challenger CL-601 with registration number N989BC, operated by VMO Aero Limited, reportedly landed on a roadway near Asaba, Delta State, on Wednesday. The aircraft had earlier departed from Lagos before leaving the scene without regulatory clearance.
In a statement on Thursday, the NSIB said it immediately activated its emergency response protocol upon receiving notification of the incident.
The bureau deployed an investigative “Go Team” to the site to commence a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
According to the agency, the recovered flight recorders will be crucial in reconstructing events in the cockpit and assessing the aircraft’s performance before and during the incident.
“As part of this rapid response, the aircraft’s Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder have been successfully retrieved and secured for detailed analysis,” the NSIB stated.
The bureau also confirmed that investigators are gathering relevant operational, maintenance, and air traffic control records connected to the flight, while coordinating with aviation stakeholders in line with international investigation standards.
NSIB Director-General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., said the swift recovery of the recorders was essential to uncovering the facts behind the incident.
He stated: “The NSIB acted promptly following the occurrence on June 10, 2026. The immediate deployment of our investigative Go Team and the swift recovery of the Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder are critical steps that will help establish the facts of this incident.
“We are relieved that there were no reported fatalities or serious injuries. Our commitment remains the advancement of aviation safety in Nigeria.”
The incident has drawn widespread attention within the aviation sector, particularly after reports that the aircraft landed on a roadway and later departed without returning to an approved airport facility.
The NSIB further stated that its ongoing investigation will include detailed analysis of the flight recorders, review of technical documents, interviews with relevant personnel, and examination of additional evidence.
It also called on members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or possess relevant photos, videos, or CCTV footage to assist with the investigation.
The bureau emphasized that the objective of the inquiry is to determine the causes and contributing factors of the incident and to issue safety recommendations aimed at preventing a recurrence, stressing that the investigation is not intended to assign blame or liability.
