Bafana Bafana were defeated by the tournament co-hosts at Mexico City Stadium on Thursday night, with goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez sealing the victory. South Africa’s challenges were compounded after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off during the encounter.

Reacting on his podcast after the match, Oliseh said the magnitude of the World Cup stage appeared to affect the South African players.

“Finally, the World Cup is here,” Oliseh said.

“With 80,000 fans inside the Azteca Stadium, a spectacular opening ceremony, and memories of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, expectations were high.

“But what we witnessed was a battle of nerves. Mexico’s 2-0 victory was not primarily about tactics—it was about handling pressure. South Africa are not a poor team. In my opinion, they struggled because the occasion seemed too overwhelming for them.”

Meanwhile, South African defender Ime Okon has called on his teammates to quickly move on from the defeat and focus on their upcoming fixtures.

Although disappointed by the result, Okon said there were encouraging aspects of the team’s performance against Mexico.

“It was a difficult match, but there were moments when we competed well. We have to stay positive, learn from the loss, and focus on the next game,” he told SportyTV after the final whistle.

South Africa will now shift attention to their crucial second Group-stage encounter against the Czech Republic, scheduled to take place at Atlanta Stadium on June 18, where they will be seeking their first points of the tournament.
