Okonkwo had accused Obi and some South-East political figures of allegedly collecting or demanding about ₦10 million from aspirants in exchange for party tickets. He also raised claims in a television interview suggesting financial misconduct and bribery within Obi’s political camp.
In response, Obi’s legal team dismissed the allegations as false and defamatory, demanding ₦5 billion in damages along with a public apology, and threatening legal action if the claims are not withdrawn.
Speaking in an interview with NoireTV, Obi rejected the accusations, insisting that he has always conducted himself within the boundaries of law and due process.
“I can never act rascally. I have never been known for that; I always operate within established rules and guidelines,” he said.
He added that while individuals are free to express opinions, he would not engage in the practices he has consistently criticised.
“People can say whatever they like, but I will never be part of what I have always spoken against,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor further stated that had he intended to act improperly, he would have done so while in office, rather than leaving public service with what he described as a clean record.
“If I wanted that, I would have done it when I left office as governor and taken all the money like others do,” he added.
