A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London returned a unanimous not-guilty verdict on Wednesday after a 12-week trial examining allegations of corruption during her tenure as Nigeria’s petroleum minister.
Alison-Madueke, who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan between 2010 and 2015, consistently denied all allegations levelled against her.
The jury reached its decision after approximately 46 hours of deliberation.
Prosecutors had accused her of receiving benefits from oil and gas industry figures in exchange for preferential treatment in contract awards and business dealings in Nigeria.
They alleged that she lived a lavish lifestyle in London allegedly funded through illicit benefits, including £100,000 in cash, over £2 million spent at Harrods, £4.6 million in property renovations, private jet travel, luxury chauffeur services, and payments for household staff in upscale properties in London and Buckinghamshire.
According to the prosecution, these benefits were allegedly tied to her position as petroleum minister and were offered in return for influence and favourable decisions.
However, Alison-Madueke denied all wrongdoing, telling the court that she neither requested nor accepted bribes and did not abuse her public office.
Her defence team argued that the case was politically motivated and that investigators misinterpreted legitimate financial transactions and lifestyle-related expenses.
The trial, overseen by Justice Justine Thornton, focused on alleged conduct between 2011 and 2015.
Had she been convicted under UK anti-bribery laws, she could have faced up to 10 years in prison and an unlimited fine.
She was tried alongside oil executive Olatimbo Ayinde and her brother, Doye Agama, who were also accused of related bribery offences.
Ayinde faced charges involving alleged bribery of Alison-Madueke and a foreign public official, while Agama was accused of conspiracy to commit bribery linked to payments associated with his church.
Both co-defendants also denied the allegations throughout the trial.
On Wednesday, the jury cleared all defendants of all charges, bringing the long-running case to an end.
