I Never Said That!” — Peter Obi Reacts To Claims Over Military Salary Increase

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has dismissed reports claiming that he urged military personnel to reject the recent salary increase until after the 2027 general election.

Obi described the report as false, saying his position had been misrepresented and taken out of context.

The NDC presidential flag bearer made the clarification in a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday.

Obi urged Nigerians to disregard the report, insisting that he never asked soldiers to turn down any salary increment.

“I wish to address a recent report that falsely attributes a statement to me, suggesting that Nigerian soldiers should refuse any salary increments until after the elections. This assertion is entirely untrue,” he said.

According to Obi, he has consistently advocated better welfare, improved equipment and enhanced protection for members of Nigeria’s security forces, particularly soldiers operating in challenging and dangerous environments.

He reiterated his respect for military personnel, especially members of the Nigerian Army who continue to serve and protect the country under difficult circumstances.

“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also recalled his previous concerns over the loss of soldiers during security operations, particularly an incident involving what he described as a delayed rescue effort.

“My concern was palpable when soldiers were lost to insurgents due to a delayed rescue effort, prompting me to question how those defending us could be left vulnerable in their time of need,” he said.

Obi further promised that the welfare, safety and resources of military personnel would be given priority if he wins the 2027 presidential election.

“Should I be elected President, the well-being, resources, safety, and honour of our soldiers will be a paramount priority,” he said.

He stressed that security personnel deserve the full support of the government, adding that those charged with protecting the nation “must never be relegated to a secondary concern.”

Obi urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as a misleading report, while reaffirming his commitment to presenting what he called a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.

“I implore the Nigerian populace to dismiss this misleading report. I remain committed to articulating a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria,” Obi said.
